Silver Bracelets in Egypt: How to Choose the Right Style

Silver Bracelets in Egypt: How to Choose the Right Style

Naggat Silver · 925 Sterling Silver · Updated October 2026

Most guides to silver bracelets are really guides to styles. That is the easy half. The half that decides whether you still like the bracelet in a year is the material, and in Egypt that question is harder than it should be, because three very different things get sold under the same word.

Sterling silver, silver-plated, and stainless steel with a silver finish all photograph identically. Only one of them is silver.

This guide covers the material difference, what drives the price, and the practical checks that stop you overpaying.

Short answer: Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, stamped 925. Silver-plated jewellery is a thin silver layer over brass or copper, and it wears through. Stainless steel with a silver finish contains no silver at all, but it does not tarnish and survives water. Silver bracelets in Egypt run from 300 EGP for a simple sterling design to 4,700 EGP for a stone-set piece.

Sterling silver vs silver-plated vs stainless steel

These are not grades of the same thing. They are different materials with different behaviour, and the price gap between them is the reason sellers blur the distinction.

Sterling silver (925) Silver-plated Stainless steel
Silver content 92.5% Thin surface layer None
Tarnishes Yes, polishes off Yes, and plating wears through No
Water safe Better avoided No Yes
Lasts Decades Months to a few years Years
Repairable Yes, by a jeweller No, re-plating only Rarely needed

The practical summary: sterling is the real thing and ages honestly. Plating fails quietly and cannot be fixed at home. Stainless is the durable option if you want zero maintenance and do not need the metal to be silver.

How to check which one you are holding

The hallmark. Sterling silver is stamped 925, sometimes S925 or STERLING. The number means 92.5% purity. If there is no stamp anywhere on the piece, treat it as plated.

The magnet. Silver is not magnetic. Brass and copper, the usual cores under plating, are not strongly magnetic either, so this test catches only the crudest fakes. It is a filter, not proof.

The smell. Rub the piece between your fingers and let it warm. Silver has almost no smell. Plated brass takes on a metallic, slightly sour note as it heats.

The edges. Look closely at the clasp and the inner curve of the band. That is where plating wears first, and where you can often see a different colour underneath on a used piece.

What no test can tell you: none of these checks prove a piece is sterling on their own. A hallmark can be stamped on plated metal, and the magnet test passes on anything non-ferrous. The only definitive check is an acid or XRF test at a jeweller, which is why buying from a seller who will show you the stamp matters more than any at-home trick.

What drives the price of a silver bracelet

Four things, in rough order of impact.

The metal. Silver is priced by weight and the market moves. A heavier bracelet costs more before any design is involved, which is why weight is the first thing to check when a price looks too low.

Stones. Cubic zirconia adds relatively little. A full tennis line adds a lot of setting labour, which is where the cost actually goes.

Setting and finish. Hand-set stones and a properly polished interior cost time. This is the difference between a 1,400 EGP tennis bracelet and a 4,700 EGP one.

Brand. A branded piece carries a markup for the name. That is not a defect, but it is worth knowing what you are paying for.

As a reality check: genuine 925 silver bracelets in Egypt generally start around 300 EGP. If someone offers a heavy silver bracelet for 80 EGP, the price does not cover the raw metal, before any labour. The material is not silver.

Maintenance: what actually matters

Sterling silver tarnishes. It is a reaction with sulphur in the air, not damage, and it comes off with a polish cloth. Two habits do more than any product: keep it dry, and keep it out of open air.

Store pieces in a closed box or a sealed bag rather than on an open tray. Tarnish is a surface reaction, and less air contact means slower tarnish.

Stainless steel needs nothing beyond a wipe. That is the whole reason to choose it.

Sizing a bracelet

Measure your wrist with a strip of paper, not string, and add 1.5 to 2 cm for a comfortable fit. The bracelet should sit below the wrist bone and move slightly when you shake your hand.

If you are buying as a gift and cannot measure, choose an adjustable fitting. Several pieces in our range adjust, which removes the risk entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How much do silver bracelets cost in Egypt?

From about 300 EGP for a simple sterling silver design up to 4,700 EGP for a full stone-set tennis bracelet. Most everyday pieces sit between 500 and 1,400 EGP.

What is the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated?

Sterling silver is 92.5% silver all the way through and stamped 925. Silver-plated jewellery is a thin silver layer over brass or copper, and that layer wears through with use, first at the edges and clasp.

Is 925 silver real silver?

Yes. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver with the remainder usually copper for strength. The 925 stamp records that proportion.

Does a 925 stamp prove a bracelet is authentic?

Not on its own. A stamp can be applied to plated metal. Treat it as one signal among several, alongside weight, finish quality and whether the seller will show you a close-up of the actual piece.

Which lasts longer, sterling silver or stainless steel?

Stainless steel needs no maintenance and will not change colour, so it lasts longer with less effort. Sterling silver lasts decades too, but it tarnishes and needs occasional polishing.

Can silver bracelets be repaired?

Sterling silver can be repaired and resized by a jeweller, which is one of its advantages. Silver-plated pieces generally cannot, because the plating cannot be restored at home and re-plating costs more than the piece.
